The Smithsonian Institute is arguably the most important research and educational institution in the United States. Numerous museums, galleries, zoos and scientific
projects are operated there. The Institute‘s headquarters are located in a building called “The Castle” on Jefferson Drive in Washington.
A blend of late Romanesque and early Gothic typical of 19th century America, the imposing red sandstone Norman-style building was built in 1855.

The building houses all administration as well as a visitor centre with digital maps and interactive displays that answer questions.
